Indica vs Sativa: Understanding the Differences Between the Two Cannabis Plants

Medicinal cannabis can be used to treat a wide variety of common conditions. Generally, medicinal cannabis results in the user having a sense of greater physical and mental relaxation, pain reduction, increased appetite, and better sleep. However, there are two main varieties of medicinal cannabis plants, and each offers a different set of benefits. Understanding the difference between the two is important to finding the right strain for each patient.

The two major types of cannabis plants are Indica and Sativa. Each strain has it’s own range of effects on the body and mind resulting in a wide range of medicinal benefits. Indica strains generally provide a sense of deep body relaxation. Sativa strains tend to provide a more energizing experience.

Cannabis Indica

Typically, cannabis Indica plants are short, bushy plants with wide leaves. Indica plants typically grow faster and have a higher yield than the sativa variety. Medicine produced from cannabis Indica plants have higher CBD and lower THC counts.

The major qualities of Indica medicinal strains include:

  • increased mental relaxation
  • muscle relaxation
  • decreases nausea
  • decreases acute pain
  • increases appetite
  • increases dopamine (a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers)
  • for night time use

Cannabis Sativa

Cannabis Sativa plants are opposite of the Indica strains and grow tall and thin with narrow leaves. Sativa plants are also generally a lighter shade of green than their counterpart, the Indica strain. Sativa strains take longer to grow, mature, and require more light. Medicine produced from cannabis Sativa plants have lower CBD and higher THC counts.

The major qualities of Sativa medicinal strains include:

  • anti-anxiety
  • anti-depressant
  • treats chronic pain
  • increases focus and creativity
  • increases serotonin (a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of learning, mood, sleep, anxiety and appetite)
  • for day time use

It's important to know the grower because it keeps the quality consistent to how you like your bud. The methods growers use are different than one another. Some are grown for higher yield and bigger nugs, while some growers prefer to grow smaller nugs but high in terpenes (flavour). The grower also usually keep their flush time consistent with their grows which determines the color of the ash. The curing method is also a big factor with each grower. Some use heat and fans to quick dry (usually cheaper strains) and some use low temp air dry (Craft style/higher grade).

Bottom line: Knowing which grower you like will give you a small bump in your decision making because you'll know how their quality is.

This is a question that is almost impossible to give a generic answer. It really depends on the person using the cannabis to know what they really need. In my experience, most people just smoke to get high. However, there are the many people that use cannabis for multiple health reasons.

It's VERY hard for me to tell you which strains are best for your health. I would rather not answer that question because I don't want to guide you incorrectly. My best advice would be to buy a mix and match and see which strains you liked the most and reorder that specific strain.

There's also the fact that all marijuana farms are grown differently.
